DIFFERENT BETWEEN FASHION AND STYLE
There is no right or wrong with fashion or style.
It just is what it is
and it all depends on your personal goals, your personal interest, what works for you,
what doesn't work for you. They're both needed.
I talk about style, developing your style,
little facts, hacks, tricks on how you can style your particular body and a style that can suit you,
your lifestyle, and your goals.
But in this blog, I'm going to debunk a myth or a misunderstanding.
A lot of us think that style and fashion are the same.
They are in a general sense,
but in reality they are two different concepts .
The difference between style and fashion.
First, let's break down the definition of fashion and style.
Fashion is a popular dominant style within a certain time and within a culture,
It's usually what we know as trends or
fads or what's in or what's in this season. What is everybody wearing right now.
That's basically what fashion is.
It usually has a short lifespan and it is determined by the fashion industry
and their leaders. They're the ones that basically say wear this this season because
this is in without any much logical reason.
But if you're a fashion follower, it's what you go with.
Style is basically short for personal style.
So in essence, it is what's personal.
It is what's individualistic.
It is what's unique to a specific person.
It is the individual that decides what they should wear,
without much consideration about what's in trend, what's in style, what's in fashion,
what everybody else is wearing.
The person who has a personal style,
they are the ones that determine
what they should wear, what should be in their closet, and how they should put themselves together.
There is definitely an overlap between fashion and style, but a rule of thumb to
know the differences is that style relates to the individual while fashion relates to the collective.
Fashion says "me too."
Style says, "me only,"
and that's a good way you can understand the differences.
When we look at fashion and style side by side,
Fashion promotes the industry.
Style promotes the self or the individual.
A person who participates in fashion, unconsciously or consciously, they seek
to connect with the collective by looking like them by dressing like them by doing what everyone
else is doing.
A person who participates in style,
this person, subconsciously or deliberately, seeks
to express their self, their individuality, and their self-awareness through their style.
When you participate in fashion, you'll find that you're in a constant cycle of getting rid
of clothes and buying new clothes getting rid of clothes
because it's always changing. so like
what you buy this year two years from now this time like you never wear it because it's just
not aesthetically trendy anymore.
You know what I mean? so like you're constantly
having to get rid of clothes and buying clothes and this contributes to
textile waste the most.
When you participate in style, you have more stability in your wardrobe
and in your looks and in your outfits and you have a more consistent aesthetic.
A more consistent style, a more consistent look.
it's longer term so you're not getting rid of and
buying new clothes over and over again as much as a person who fully participates in fashion.
When you participate in fashion, you kind of run the risk of
looking good today but this time next year with that same outfit where you look good today ,
You won't look that great because
the trends change and that's not in anymore.
But with style, because it's timeless
it's generally usually classic.
so even if it's not trendy,
the person just looks good because aesthetically pleasing it's usually balanced
and it's just appealing to the eye.
With style, the outfit that you wear today
you look good today.
The same outfit, if you wore it last year
you looked good last year.
The same outfit that you wear today ,
you wear next year you look good same way,
because it is timeless it is classic and it has longevity
With fashion, to be successful in fashion like you basically have to be aware and on
top of things and being able to keep up with the changing of the trends and the cycles and
being able to keep up with it.
That's kind of the nature of trends:
It's who can achieve a trendy look the fastest,
the best, the quickest.
It's kind of like a race.
To be successful in fashion,
you kind of have to be aware of the fashion industry and the cycles and when
things are changing.
And it's also helpful if you're able to predict trends as well.
With style, to be successful in style,
you need a level of awareness
of your body.
so like your
body type, your skin tone.
What works for you,
what works for your lifestyle, your goals
It's more about self-awareness.
So, to be successful in fashion you have to be fashion aware
or industry aware.
And to be successful in style,
you have to be... you really have to be self-aware.
but yeah! In a way, fashion is easier than style because
you don't have to think for yourself.
Someone is making decisions for you and you just
need to just buy it and wear it.
But with style, the early stages of style is kind of difficult because
when you're trying to find your sweet spot
it takes time.
so it's it's a process,
it really is. It takes time.
but in the long run, having a developed style it's easier
because by then you know what you like,
you know what you don't like.
Shopping becomes easier.
I know it kind of looks like...
this blog kind of looks like fashion is a con and style is a pro.
I would say yes it is.
I may be biased but yes, absolutely, I think style is always a better option.
But fashion also has its necessity.
We do need to have fashion.
So, fashion doesn't suit everybody,
but style - you're able to tailor your style to you.
To the individual.
